📅 5th Muharram — The Growing Siege at Karbala

As the sun rose on the 5th of Muharram, the camp of Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) stood firm on the burning plains of Karbala. The numbers of Yazid’s soldiers were steadily increasing, and the mood grew tense as the looming threat of bloodshed edged closer with every hour. Yet, within the Imam’s (a.s.) camp, there was still resolve—rooted in divine purpose and absolute clarity.

⚔ Orders from Kufa: Tightening the Noose

On this day, Ibn Ziyad, Yazid's governor in Kufa, sent a stern letter to Umar ibn Sa'ad, commander of the Umayyad army besieging Karbala. The message was clear:

“Prevent Hussain and his companions from accessing water. Place them under pressure until they submit.”

The enemy forces were growing in number, revealing Yazid’s regime’s true intention—not negotiation or diplomacy, but total annihilation.

💧 The Beginning of the Water Crisis

Although the full blockade of water from the River Euphrates would be enforced a day later (on 7th Muharram), the 5th marked the start of deliberate water restriction. Enemy soldiers began stationing themselves between the Imam’s camp and the river, limiting access and initiating psychological warfare. The relentless desert heat and dryness intensified the suffering of the women, children, and the elderly in the camp.

🕊️ Imam’s Continued Spiritual Leadership

Despite the growing tension, Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) continued his worship and consultations with his companions. Fully aware of the tragic fate that awaited them, his presence remained a source of calm and courage.

He reminded his followers:

“We have not risen to seek power or mischief. We rise to reform the Ummah of my grandfather (S.A.W.A).”

His companions, sensing the inevitability of battle, reaffirmed their allegiance with unwavering commitment, standing resolute even as the circle of death closed around them.

📚 Sources That Record These Events

The events of the 5th of Muharram are recorded in multiple early and respected sources, including:

  • Tarikh al-Tabari (History of al-Tabari)

  • Maqtal al-Husayn by Abu Mikhnaf

  • Nafasul Mahmoom by Shaykh Abbas Qummi

  • Lohoof by Sayyid Ibn Tawus

These texts confirm the increasing military pressure, the beginning of water restriction, and the continued spiritual strength within the Imam’s camp.

📌 Reflection: Escalation of Tyranny, Resilience of Truth

The 5th of Muharram teaches that tyranny often escalates gradually—through pressure, isolation, and control. Yet, Karbala remains a timeless symbol that truth is not measured by numbers or weapons, but by unwavering commitment and faith.

While Yazid’s forces swelled in number, Imam al-Hussain’s (a.s.) companions grew in spiritual stature. Where others saw only a harsh desert, they saw the field of eternal victory.

According to Al-Irshad by Shaykh al-Mufid (vol. 2, page 78), Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad sent al-Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi with 1,000 soldiers to intercept Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) . Their first major encounter occurred at a place called al-Ruhaymah (الرُحَيْمَة) or al-Ruhayn . 💧 The Water Incident – Proof of Hussain’s Character From Al-Irshad , Shaykh al-Mufid writes: When al-Hurr's forces met al-Hussain (a.s.) at al-Ruhayn, the Imam saw that the troops and horses were fatigued and thirsty. 🏴 2nd Muharram 61 A.H. — The Arrival at Karbala

✨ A Divine Destination Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) knew that this journey would end in martyrdom. It was never about worldly victory. Yet at its start, there was hope — not in the sense of expecting safety or power, but in reforming the Muslim ummah as he had declared: “I am not rising out of arrogance or rebellion… I only wish to reform the nation of my grandfather.” ( Al-Irshad , Shaykh al-Mufid, vol. 2) The early days held hope that people might still respond to truth. But Karbala was the destination decreed by Allah — a place where history would be written in blood and loyalty. 📍 Arrival at the Land of Karbala As the caravan approached the region, the horses came to a sudden stop. Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) asked about the name of the land. The reply came: "This land is called Karbala." Imam al-Hussain (a.s.) reportedly wept and said: "This is a place of karb (grief) and bala’ (trial). This is where our blood will be spilled." This narration is record...
